Introduction
The Association was established during the community's Sesquicentennial celebration of 1981 for the purpose of collecting materials and artifacts pertaining to the history and development of the Allegany area. The Education Department of the University of the State of New York granted an Absolute Charter on December 10, 1987.

Location
The Association's permanent meeting site and shelter for historical artifacts is in the former United Methodist Church located at 25 N. Second Street in the village of Allegany. The church, a local historical landmark, was constructed in 1855 by the Methodist Episcopal Congregation, one of the earliest religious societies in the village. The Association now owns the building. The layout of the church has been preserved, including the original pews and pulpit.

Meetings

The 26th annual Allegany Heritage Days, sponsored by the Allegany Area Historical Association, will be held on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2.

A chicken BBQ will be held Friday at the Allegany Community Center on Main Street from 5 p.m. untill all the dinners are sold. Adult dinners are $7.00, children dinner are $3.50, with tickets at the door, and takeouts available.

Festivities on Saturday at the Heritage Center, 25 North Second Street, will begin at 10 a.m with craft sales, Country Cupboard sales, a quilt display, and a display of Allegany Central School class pictures. Spinnng and weaving demonstrations will begin at 11 a.m., and the Allegany Alumni & Friends Band will play from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Food sales will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Ice Cream Social will begin at noon. The Balloon Man, hay wagon rides and face painting will be in the afternoon, along with entertainment by the Olean Barbershoppers.

An antique car display will be held in the parking lot of the Allegany Community Federal Credit Union on Main Street from 10 am. to 4 p.m.

The featured exhibit this year is YesterDays in Allegany, which will display many "labor-saving" devices and appliances in use around the early 1900's. This exhibit will be on display from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and each Wednesday thereafter from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Village and Town of Allegnay will open Heritage Days weekend with an Allegany Get-together on Thursday, August 31 fro 6 to 8 p.m. at the Firemen's Park on North First Street. Everyone attending will get a free hot dog, pop and chips, and the Allegany Alumni & Friends Band will play from 6:30 to 8 p.m.


Research Materials

Tales of War and Confinement from World War II is a book containing letters from Richard (Richie) Boser and Clemens (Clem) Martiny written to the editor of the Allegany Citizen during the Second World War. Mr. Boser served in the European theater of action, and Mr. Martiny was with the Seabees in the South Pacific. Their letters were researched as an Eagle Scout project by Amit Patel of Allegany. The book also has a letter written by N.V.V.F. (Van) Munson detailing his experiences as a German prisoner of war. This book sells for $6.00, plus $3.00 shipping and handling.

A third printing has been done of Our Allegany Heritage, 1831-1981 , our orginal book about the history of Allegany, New York. This soft cover edition sells for $7.50, plus $2.50 shipping and handling.
